Description
This animation shows the evolution of thermoremanence (TRM) in a slowly-cooled mafic intrusion. The intrusion is 2 km thick with its top 500 m below the surface. Samples in the 500 m stratigraphic section shown take approximately 20 kyr to cool from 580 to 500°C. The top panel shows geomagnetic intensity variations of the field model (GGF100k, Panovska et al., 2018) used to simulate the TRM acquired. The bottom panels show the declination, inclination and intensity of the magnetization acquired as cooling progresses (temperatures in right panel). Single domain TRM blocking using the code of Nagy et al. (2021). |
