Results are presented of chemical analyses of 60 phosphorite samples from the Phosphoria Formation. The phosphate is basically apatite, with small but significant variable substitutions (Na, Sr, U, and Th for Ca; CO (sub 3) and SO (sub 4) for PO (sub 4) ). Rare metals not associated with apatite are associated mainly with the organic-matter component; Cr is most abundant. The average phosphorite consists of about 80 percent apatite, 10 percent quartz, 5 percent muscovite-illite, 2 percent organic matter, 1 percent dolomite-calcite, 1 percent iron oxide, and 1 percent other components. Texturally it is a medium-grained pellet phosphorite.
