Inner Blake Plateau Phosphorites 15 P 25.8           wt%ox 10 samples of phosphorites from the inner Blake Plateau, analyzed by the Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. yielded the following analyses (Pilkey, 1967): 20.1, 22.2, 31.9, 27.7, 22.8, 24.8, 22.6, 20.5, 21.6, 26.5% P2O5. A sample of whale earbone assayed 31.9% P2O5. The phosphorites averaged 24.97% or 52.5% PBL (bone phosphate of lime). P2O5 concentrations have been reported for many bottom sediments taken during the Gill cruises from the southeastern continental margin of the United States (Moore and Gorsline, 1960). These have been used in several subsequent works (e.g. Gorsline, 1963; Uchupi, 1963; Goodell, 1967). Both our analytical values and petrographic estimates for phosphate in shelf areas are much lower than the Gill values. For example, much of the inner Florida shelf is indicated to contain more than 3% P2O5, whereas our data fail to indicate more than a few tenths of a percent (carbonate background values). Since our data are in general agreement with control analyses performed by the U.S. Geological Survey laboratories in Washington, we have not used the Gill data for quantitative purposes. A sample of phosphatized bone (Gosnold Station 2538), is distinguished from above marine phosphorite by higher organic carbon (1.0%), lower CO2 (3-5%), and higher total S as SO3 = 1.7 - 2.2.
