Description
Atafu Atoll is located at 8¿ 32.9' S, 172¿ 31.0' W and is part of the Tokelau Seamounts on the Pacific Plate. It is 4208 m high with the top at -400 m and the ocean bottom at -4608 m. The atoll has a volume of 7053 km3 and is slightly elongated with an azimuth of approximately 122¿. The atoll has relatively smooth edges with two predominate rifts observed, one to the northwest and the other to the southwest. The top surface is relatively flat with two summits. A saddle connects Atafu to Pogisa and Ufiata seamounts to the north. Dredge AVON2-D60 was taken on the northwest rift and dredge AVON2-D61 was taken on the southwest rift.
