Day 1 - July 22, 2013

Reports

Left Apra Harbor (Guam) at 13.00 at the request of the Navy. Some of the ship’s equipment suffered from a lightning strike while in port. Of particular importance to the success of this cruise is the multibeam (EM 122). Although this equipment was not directly affected, some of the input parameters that it uses were offline. The computer tech restored, specifically, the TSG sensor (used to calculate surface water velocity based on temperature and salinity), while multiple meteorological sensors remain offline. The funded project focuses on mapping and dredging volcanoes that are mainly in the Tuvalu Islands (and some surrounding countries). The transit from Guam to Tuvalu takes the ship right through the “Caroline Hotspot” (including Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae, Federated States of Micronesia), and we have decided to use our transit time wisely, to map some of the lower flanks of the islands, and completely submarine features.
