Day 17 - August 7, 2013

Reports

After some mapping, we dredged the North side of the island of Vaitupu. The dredge was aimed a little deeper than usual, across a round platform that has more or less the shape of a pancake. We have seen these at the base of multiple seamounts during this cruise, and our dredge was successful, yielding a relatively large number of basalts. Many of the basalts have nice glassy margins; as we make our way further South along the Tuvalu islands we are seeing more volcanic glass, as expected for the age progression we predict. In the late evening we had mapped our way to the seamount East of Vaitupu (Telematua), where the dredge entered the water around midnight.
