Hawaiian Volcanoes Field Course 2010 A view of Puu Huluhulu. This old cone, now covered with vegetation, is a Kīpuka. A Kīpuka is old dome or hill that is completely surrounded by younger lava flows. Kīpuka appear as islands in a sea of lava and may act as a refuge during active lava flows.
