Walvis Ridge MV1203 Expedition Once a day we fire a device called the 'XBT'. It is used to project a tube containing a temperature sensor out into the water, where it will not tangle with other cables hanging off the ship or go into the engine. The sensor is attached to the 'gun' with a copper wire that spools out as the sensor descends into the ocean. The XBT records a profile of temperature changes with depth. This data is used to calibrate the sonar, because sound travels at different speeds depending on water temperature.
