Iron Oxidizing Bacteria 1 of 4
These 4 pictures show the twisting rusty mucous trails of Iron oxydizing bacteria. They appear as dark filaments in the picture. If all 4 photos are downloaded you can step through them to see the bacteria at different focal lengths. Just to the left of center is a prominant filament - the bacterium is at the upper end and it's attachment point is at its lower end. Clicking between the pictures makes the twisting in the filaments obvious. The branching filaments in the upper left are most likely the result of a cell division. The filaments are about 1/100 the thickness of a human hair. In other words a human hair would block most of the picture.
