GENERALS

Each file contains the following columns:
    - AGE of the artifact or lake sediment
    - Standard deviation of the age (SIGMA_AGE)
    - Site latitude (SITE_LAT)
    - Site longitude (SITE_LON)
    - Declination (DECL) between -180 and 180 degrees
    - Inclination (INCL)
    - Confidence oval (ALPHA_95) of directions
    - Intensity (BA) in microtesla
    - Standard deviation of the intensity (SIGMA_BA) in microtesla
    - NAME of the datum. This can be a four digit GEOMAGIA50v2 ID, or a three letters abbreviation of the lake name (See Donadini et al., 2009, Table 2).
An additional "int" to the abbreaviation indicates the intensity data for a particular lake.

Null values are always expressed as "999", with exception for the AGE data, but these are always defined.

The data are sorted by NAME

DATASETS

All archeological artifacts data set: ARCH3k0.dat

This data set consists of all available archeomagnetic data covering the past 3000 years included in the new GEOMAGIA50v2 database. It consists of 2877 Decl, 4304 Incl, and 3001 Int (10182 data Tot)

Constrained archeological artifacts data set: ARCH3kcst0.dat

To investigate the effect of data selection/rejection on the data sets, a set of simple reliability criteria was applied to the ARCH3k0 data set. In this case, only data with alfa95 <= 10 degrees, standard deviation of VADM <= 2 10^{22} Am^{2}, and a standard deviation of the age <= 100 years were kept. This data set consists of 1991 Decl, 3022 Incl, 1423 Int (6436 data Tot, 3746 data rejected)

    Lake sediments data set: SED3k0.dat

This data set consists of all lake sediments data, with also the scaled relative paleointensities. This data set consists of 10739 Decl, 11563 Incl, 3943 Int (26245 data Tot)

All archeological artifacts and all lake sediments: CALS3k0.dat

This data set is a combination of the ARCH3k0.dat (all archeological data) and the SED3k0.dat (all lake sediment data). Models for the same age range, but with different data sets, have already been produced and described by Korte and Constable (2003) and Korte and Constable (2005), and are available up to version 2. We expect that this model should be comparable in large scale to the CALS3k.2 version (Korte and Constable, 2005), but with substantially improved resolution. The new CALS3k.3 data set includes almost 11 000 new data for the past 3000 years. This data set consists of 13616 Decl, 15867 Incl, 6944 Int (36427 data Tot)

Constrained archeological artifacts and lake sediments: CALS3kcst0.dat.

This data set groups the constrained ARCH3kcst0.dat archeological data set and a constrained data set of lake sediments, and has the most complex set of constraints. The uncertainties of the lake sediments are in general larger than those for archeological artifacts. In several cases we also observe inconsistencies either within the record, or when compared with either archeological artifacts or with other lake sediments in the neighborhood. To overcome this problem, lake sediments values were checked against other available data in a 1000 km radius from the lake location, or alternatively against the ARCH3k.1 model (all archeological data). This data set consists of 7320 Decl, 12413 Incl, 3949 Int (23809 data Tot)

    All archeological artifacts model: ARCH3k1.dat

After the statistical rejection of outliers 50 declinations, 51 inclinations, and 37 intensities were rejected (Total 138 data rejected).

Constrained archeological artifacts data set: ARCH3kcst1.dat

After the statistical rejection of outliers 31 declinations, 41 inclinations, and 22 intensities were rejected (Total 94 data rejected).

    Lake sediments data set: SED3k1.dat

After the statistical rejection of outliers 218 declinations, 125 inclinations, and 50 intensities were rejected (Total 393 data rejected).

All archeological artifacts and all lake sediments: CALS3k.3.dat

After the statistical rejection of outliers 295 declinations, 164 inclinations, and 85 intensities were rejected (Total 544 data rejected).

Constrained archeological artifacts and lake sediments: CALS3kcst1.dat

After the statistical rejection of outliers 126 declinations, 87 inclinations, and 40 intensities were rejected (Total 253 data rejected).
