Final Day
The Parking Lot

The first stop for the day was scheduled for the green sand beaches at south point. However due to excessive rains the stop had to be cancelled. The class had a lovely drive out only to turn around after waiting 15 minutes in the parking lot. So instead the class moved on to event 2.

Punalu’u Bakery

In response to the rain, we went to the southernmost bakery in the U.S. to get ice-cream and pastries. We crowded the store and ate all the free samples while waiting in line for snacks.

Footprints Trail

The third and final stop for the day was the footprints trail area. During an eruption in 1700, a tribe of Hawai’ian natives decided to brave the eruption and try to pass through the area while ash rained down upon them. In the process they left footprints behind that were preserved in the Keanakakoi ash. The footprint preserved in the monument was barely discernable so the class went in search of better ones.
