My role is to obtain samples for culturing and to assist in processing samples for a variety of experiments for the larger Tebo/Staudigel/Templeton Lab group. I am attempting to culture microorganisms that can grow by oxidizing H2. I am also interested in Mn-oxidizing bacteria.
Where is your hometown?
I’m from Hamden, CT but now I call Boulder, CO home.
What is your career?
I am a graduate student in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Colorado – Boulder where I study geomicrobiology.
What is your education and training?
I have a BA in geology from Colgate University and an MS in geological sciences from the University of Idaho. I also spent a few years teaching field science to elementary though high school age students.
What inspired you to choose your career and which persons were your role models?
I wanted to study a science that brought together geology and biology and that helped us to better understand the Earth and the way it works. I also love to teach and wanted to incorporate teaching into my career. My role models have been a number of amazing geology professors I have had throughout my education. I am inspired by my professors who are both amazing scientists and amazing teachers.
What are some of your favorite things about life at sea?
I enjoy meeting new people on the ship and learning a lot of new science. I also enjoy sitting on the deck, feeling the breeze, and looking out at the water.
What do you do in your free time?
I hike with my dog in the mountains and I also road bike, rock climb, and telemark ski. I also enjoy cooking and eating really good food. .
