FeMO2 Dive Cruise 2007 |
I am here to culture and study autotrophic iron- and manganese-oxidizing microbes. My specialty is studying microbial diversity using molecular techniques, such as DNA and protein analysis.
Where is your hometown?
Portland Oregon.
What is your career?
Graduate student at Oregon Health and Science University.
What is your education and training?
I am a Ph.D. student at Oregon Health and Science University with Brad Tebo. This is my third cruise to Loihi Seamount.
What inspired you to choose your career and which persons were your role models?
My favorite class in college was microbiology, and I decided that I should focus my career on something that I thought was fun. My first cruise with Craig Moyer at Western Washington University during my masters was a blast, and is what really set my career plan in motion. My plan worked, because I think I have the best job in the world.
What are some of your favorite things about life at sea?
I love exploring new areas and finding new vent sites. I also love working with all of the scientists on board, who also think they have the best jobs in the world!
What do you do in your free time?
I enjoy backpacking and reading. Lately, my free time is spent remodeling my kitchen and working on linux.
