Day 31 - August 21, 2013

Reports

The small ridge West of the main structure of Siafiafi Bank yielded 2 volcanic rocks (seemingly more evolved), and a range of breccias and mud, plus some old corals, with Mn crust. After This dredge we targeted two locations around Lalla Rookh Bank. On the Northern side, we retrieved significant Mn crusts, with very small amounts of highly altered and vesiculated lava fragments. The Southeastern dredge contained many more, and relatively fresh, basalts with decent olivine and clinopyroxene phenocrysts. This dredge also yielded some sediment and a Mn covered sponge. Dredging here was followed by a long transit South to the edge of Tongan waters.
