Hawaiian Volcanoes Field Course 2010 Recent breakouts in July/August spread towards the west where lava flows covered the road that had provided access to the ocean entry. The covered over previous flows from 1991, which destroyed many houses in the community. The flows followed the topography of a horst/graben system parallel to the coast while they were en route to the ocean entry. After a gradual decrease, these breakouts have since stopped altogether because of the establishment of a lava tube supporting flow towards the ocean entry.
