Operations had to be stopped early for Site U1372 because the drill string got stuck in the seamount drill hole due to too much volcanic rubble falling into the hole from above. At some point the drill string could not be rotated anymore and after trying to get "unstuck" for almost 24 hours, it was decided to leave the site. However, first the drill string needed to be severed with a well-carried-out and perfectly-placed explosion deep within the drill pipe that was still residing inside the seamount. The picture shows the severed drill pipe once we brought it back to deck.
