Probing Wandering Mantle Plumes in the Pacific Ocean
From 12 December 2010 to 12 February 2011 thirty scientists set out to sea to study the Louisville seamount trail using the drill vessel JOIDES Resolution. They will use drilled samples of four ancient submarine volcanoes (between 50 and 80 million years old) to figure out the volcanic history of these seamounts and how their sources deep in the mantle may have moved over time. The ultimate goal of this expedition is to figure out the convectional character of the Earth's mantle and how much mantle plumes may have wandered over time.
