Bacterial traps deployed on microbial mat A second bacterial trap is deployed in the same mat. The chemistry of mats varies from the bottom to top because of the greater influence of volcanic and biologic activity deeper in the mat. It is likely that this difference results in a different microbial community inside the mat than on its surface. To compare the surface community with the deeper community this trap is being pushed below the surface of the microbial mat.
