Processing of rock samples The slimey orange deposit on the right edge of this sample was deposited by iron oxidizing microbes. The rock will be broken up and and the fragments incubated with stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen. The quantity of these isotopes incorporated into microbial tissues reveals information about metabolism and growth of these microbes.
