Sampling vent water
Titanium water samplers are used to capture vent water to determine what elements it contains and what are missing. All the water venting from Loihi was originally seawater but reactions with hot magma have caused reactions that cause the water to be high in hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and iron. The composition of the water indicates how high a temperature was reached.
