Brian Glazer explains the tripod sampler
The tripod was designed and built to make very precise electrochemical measurments through chemical gradients. The in situ electochemistry analyzer (ISEA) probe is placed in the tripod and the tripod deployed over a location with a chemical gradient such as a hydrothemal vent or microbial mat. A stepper motor then lowers the probe through the gradient so that changes in chemical concentration with depth can be measured precisely. The tripod is specially designed to be used by submersible manipulators.
