Staying afloat
When you bring something down to the ocean floor, like expensive scientific equipment, or you place valuable rock samples on the elevator in the depths of Pele's Pit, there needs to be a way back for it to the sea surface. These floats are attached to the top of Jason's elevator, and when the elevator is released from its anchor, they provide the buoyancy to bring it all up again for a save recovery.
