Retrieving the OSMO sampler Just a few minutes after setting Elevator 1 on deck and after it has been secured by the Thompson crew, the scientists swarm around the elevator to collect their samples and instruments. In this case one of the OSMO samplers, which had been sitting on the ocean floor in Pele's Pit for a year to collect seawater, is quickly carried away toward one of the labs inside the Thompson for further processing and perservation.
