Exposure experiment 122 removed from a mini-biobox Brad Tebo quickly removes one of the exposure experiments that has been exposed to Loihi vent fluids for about a year. Little packages of quartz minerals, different kinds of basalt and rhyolite were stored inside this PVC housing that is open to seawater flowing freely through it. By using different materials with different chemical composition, the scientists can study what kind of substrate are most liked by the microbes calling Loihi home.
