Emily inoculates a growth chamber
Emily has provided some sterile basalt powder and iron oxide in a sealed test tube. She is innoculating the tube with a culture grown from pulverized basalt. If the culture can continue to grow in the sterile tube, it is presumably using the iron in the basalt as a source of energy.
