MagIC Version 2.3

We are pleased to announce the release of Version 2.3 of the MagIC (Magnetics Information Consortium) metadata and data model for the PMAG and RMAG databases. These databases have a joint data model, which has been developed over the past three years to accommodate as much information from modern paleomagnetic and rock magnetic studies as users are willing to contribute. Programming and testing of the data model (in beta versions 1.0 through 1.8) has been conducted by the MagIC Database Team, in consultation with the paleomagnetic and rock magnetic research communities. Data from the GPMDB, PSVRL, TRANS, SECVR and PINT databases have been migrated to the MagIC database, and can now be viewed online through the PMAG and RMAG web portals. In addition to these legacy data, there are a substantial number of modern data studies already online, that demonstrate the more extensive archiving capabilities available within MagIC.

This release coincides with the MagIC Database going live for the first time. Users can view online, all the data that have already been placed in the database. More importantly it is now possible for users to make their own contributions to the database, by uploading their own newly collected or legacy data, so that they will be accessible to the broader magnetics community. MagIC will be a successful database, only when a large fraction of published paleomagnetic and rock magnetic data are available in this archive. We invite you to Contribute Your Data to help achieve this success.

Viewing and uploading of data can be done from either the PMAG or RMAG portals. Anybody can view the data, but before contributing (your) data you must first carry out a simple Registration process. Data contributions must follow the MagIC Data Model and are tied to a citation in the EarthRef.org Reference Database.

Version 2.3 Software for Uploading can be downloaded from http://earthref.org/cgi-bin/erda.cgi?n=135 ...
