On this website you can find practical information about the field trip itself, which courses are prerequisite, what to bring to Hawaii, where to register, etc. This site will be maintained to also report the findings of the participants in the form of daily reports and image galleries, and many other data products. This is a Fall Quarter 2009 class, with the field portion before the beginning of lectures in the quarter and a seminar at 3-4 pm on Wednesdays
during the Fall Quarter. If you are interested in the class, please

A spot in the class is assured after a check for the $150 deposit is received any time during the spring quarter (payable to the Regents of the University of California). The Remaining Fee will be due on June 25, 2009 (check for $850), with no refunds to accepted students. Applications accepted until June 25, 2009 or until full. Apply by e-mail to hstaudigel@ucsd.edu (cc to ltauxe@ucsd.edu) and mail the check for the $150 deposit to Hubert Staudigel, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, CA 92093-0225. Important Notice Current Activity of Kilauea is Elevated and if this activity continues it may force cancellation or substantial re-structuring of the class. The latter would result in increasing costs for transportation (approximately $200 per person, we cannot reach outcrops on foot). We will keep close eye on the eruptive activity and let you know early June how we will handle the situation. For this reason, please do not purchase any tickets to Hawaii until we announced that the class will be held and how we will address any trail/road closures due to volcanic activity. All deposit checks will be returned in the case of a cancellation.
