Hawaiian Volcanoes Field Course 2010 Don Swanson describes the layers of the explosive deposits by HVO. Interesting fact: Kilauea has explosive eruptions about as often as other volcanoes known for being explosive (e.g. Mt. St. Helens). Kilauea just happens to also erupt effusively much more often.
