Hawaiian Volcanoes Field Course 2010 Tree cast in the tephra along the Devastation trail. Thickness of cow patties (spatter) is greater on the side from which the wind blew off Pu'u Pua'i. The spatter most likely hit the tree and was still hot enough to coalesce into agglutinate, while cooler tephra filled in the rest of the area. The depth of the hole formed by the tree is the minimum height of the tephra deposit.
