Workshop Summary

Meeting Description

The Geochemical Earth Reference Model (GERM) initiative has the goal of establishing a community consensus on a chemical characterization of the Earth, its major reservoirs, their geochemical history, and the fluxes between them. A GERM workshop will be held in La Jolla, CA, USA from March 10-13, 1998 to promote such a consensus and to aid in the establishment of a GERM. The workshop will follow a format of a small number of invited keynote addresses on major reservoirs and fluxes, with long discussion periods. The La Jolla GERM meeting is planned as a scientific meeting, with an emphasis on discussions, innovative contributions and reviews that illuminate controls of GERM inventories and fluxes.

The community is invited to contribute to this discussion by submitting extended abstracts, which will be presented as short contributions during discussion periods, as posters, or by title. Contributions will also be reviewed by the keynote speakers. These abstracts may focus on the understanding of the Earth as a dynamic global chemical system, chemical or isotopic reservoir characterization, quantification of global fluxes, the isotopic evolution of the earth, chemical cycles of particular elements and modeling approaches. GERM specifically includes all major geochemical reservoirs, from the atmosphere to the core. We specifically encourage integration between traditional earth science disciplines, including physical and chemical observations.

We specifically encourage submission of abstracts to the La Jolla GERM meeting and the GERM Session at Fall AGU. The format of the AGU session will focus on individual contributions, while the La Jolla GERM workshop is designed to synthesize this information and to plan future approaches.

Abstracts and Publications

Deadline for abstracts is January 10, 1998.

Every participant in the Workshop is invited to contribute an abstract to the conference volume. These abstracts may be given as a discussion contribution, as a poster, or by title (so it is available for reference in the conference volume). The La Jolla GERM Workshop will feature keynote talks, with extended discussions, where participants will have the opportunity to make short relevant presentations during the discussion periods. We will also provide space for posters. Abstracts may include original scientific contributions, suggestions about the contents or formats of GERM, and reviews.

The program will be finalized four weeks prior to the meeting and the authors will be contacted regarding the type of presentation they have been assigned.

Abstract format: Two pages text, 1000 words or less, with up to two pages of Figures data tables and references. We would prefer that all abstracts be submitted electronically, although hard copy abstracts are acceptable. Abstracts should be 2 pages or less in length and fit on US letter size page with a 2.5 cm margin (this is equivalent to a text area of 17 x 23 cm). Figures and Tables may be included as two additional pages. Please follow the AGU format for title, addresses and text. Please submit abstracts to:

Hubert Staudigel
UCSD-IGPP 0225
La Jolla CA 92093-0225 USA

Conference Abstract Volume: For the workshop, we will prepare an abstract volume including the program, abstracts, and the up-to-date version of the GERM on the Internet.

Publications following the workshop

Proceedings Volume: Similar to the GERM meeting in Lyons, we will put together a Special Issue of Chemical Geology, welcoming contributions of all workshop participants. All papers will be peer reviewed and published within 15 - 20 months of the meeting.

Reviews of Geophysics has offered to work with GERM authors to publish suitable GERM related reviews. Keynotes and other participants willing to review aspects of the literature relating to GERM, please contact the GERM steering committee or Tom Torgersen, editor for Reviews of Geophysics.
