Workshop Program Description Studies using large data sets and centralized long-term data storage are increasingly important in all scientific disciplines. The Magnetics Information Consortium (MagIC) is a community effort funded by the National Science Foundation to archive data and enable sharing them across geomagnetic, paleomagnetic and rock magnetic communities. MagIC provides online databases designed to facilitate both uploading of data and sophisticated data searches and downloads. The primary goal of MagIC is to broaden access to data, providing tools that enable researchers to include or compare with any relevant data in their analyses, and facilitating new kinds of studies with comprehensive data sets. Over the past few years we have focused on developing capabilities for handling data related to three major science themes outlined in our last NSF proposal:
In the next phase of our work we may wish to expand the database model as scientific interests in the community evolve. On September 19 and 20, the 2011 MagIC Science & Database Workshop will offer three invited keynotes, six short science-database talks, and a poster session covering a wide range of topics in paleomagnetism, geomagnetism and rock magnetism. An introduction to the workings of the MagIC database will also be given, along with brief tutorials on archiving your own data and reviewing contributions to the database. On September 21 there will be a Special Hands-on MagIC Data Upload Workshop. This workshop is especially targeted to those who want to walk through the process of uploading and archiving data and learn more details of how the process works (e.g. senior graduate students, post-docs, lab managers, although others with interest are also welcome). Space is limited because of the tutorial nature, and we can only accommodate up to 15-20 people. It requires separate registration. Uploading Your Data (Wednesday Afternoon) Lead: Jarboe, Minnett, Koppers, Tauxe Keynotes and Science Talks The 2011 MagIC Workshop will feature keynote talks (45 minutes) with extended discussions (15 minutes), and science talks (20 minutes) on the application of the MagIC database in paleomagnetic, geomagnetic and rock magnetic research, also with discussion time (10 minutes). You are welcome to bring a single PowerPoint slide to use during the relevant discussion periods. Poster Sessions Posters will be up the whole time during the 2011 MagIC Workshop and there will be multiple occasions to view them. There also will be a dedicated poster session on the first day from 4:30-6:00 and during the reception afterwards. Thus there will be ample time for discussion during coffee hours, receptions and the designated poster session. Poster boards accommodate Poster Sizes up to 48" (high) and 72" (wide). Workshop Registration and Abstracts Registration closes August 31, 2011 and the Registration Fee is $100. This will pay for all conference expenses and it includes catering during the conference, including continental breakfasts, cookies/tea/coffee, lunch and the Monday evening reception. Please pay your registration fee by (US$) personal check or (US$) bank draft payable to "The Regents of the University of California". You can also pay this in cash at the beginning of the workshop. Travel Assistance. If you would like to participate in the 2011 MagIC Workshop but you don't have funding, we will be able to offer some limited travel assistance from support of various funding agencies or sponsors. Please contact Cathy Constable to request travel support or for further information. The deadline for requesting travel support is August 15, 2011. Abstract Deadline. The deadline for abstracts for keynotes, science talks and posters is August 31, 2011. Every participant is invited to contribute an abstract to the conference volume. These abstracts may represent a discussion contribution, a poster, or can be provided by title (to be available for reference in the conference volume only). Submit your abstracts by email to Nick Jarboe. Abstract format. Two pages text (1,000 words or less) with up to two pages of figures, data tables and references. All abstracts must be submitted electronically as Microsoft Word documents or Rich Text Format (RTF) files. In addition, send us electronic copies of your diagrams in either the PS/EPS/PDF or Adobe Illustrator format. This will ensure that we can reproduce your diagrams with the best quality in the workshop volume. If you cannot easily produce these formats, please send us the diagrams as high-resolution bitmaps (300 to 600 dpi) in the JPEG, TIFF or GIF format.
