Program Description

On February 28th and March 1st, the 2023 MagIC Workshop will offer invited speakers and a poster session covering a wide range of topics on rock magnetism and paleomagnetism. We will have sessions on planetary processes, surface environments, MagIC as a resource for the community, and paleogeography. Please see the schedule below for the list of speakers and talks.

On March 2nd the workshop will conclude with a day of hands-on workshops focusing on how to create a MagIC contribution using PmagPy's Pmag-GUI software, contributing data of varied formats, and how to use Jupyter notebooks to analyse data and interact with MagIC. Please see the PmagPy paper for information on the PmagPy software suite.

We look forward to seeing you at the workshop. It will be in-person only, but talks will be recorded and posted to our YouTube channel shortly after the workshop concludes.

If you have any questions regarding the 2023 MagIC Workshop please contact Nick Jarboe (njarboe@earthref.org).

Thursday - Group Working Sessions
9:00-10:30Introduction to uploading and downloading data from MagIC
We will first go through the steps of uploading a contribution to MagIC using templates. We will then inspect MagIC contributions that are in the database using PmagPy hosted on the EarthRef JupyterHub.
10:30-10:45Coffee Break
10:45-12:00Making a MagIC contribution from measurement data with PmagGUI
We will go through an example work flow of converting from lab format to MagIC format using the Pmag_GUI application that is part of PmagPy. We will make fits to data using Demag_GUI and then create a file that can be uploaded to MagIC.
12:00-13:00Working Lunch
13:00-14:45Interacting with MagIC data using Jupyter notebooks
We will continue to use the MagIC API to download data and conduct data analysis and visualizations within notebooks running on the EarthRef JupyterHub
14:45-15:00Coffee Break
15:00-16:50Open Working Session
This time is designed to be exploration and work time. Talk to folks on the MagIC team and PmagPy developers about MagIC and integrating it into data development and data analysis workflows. We can explore data conversion scripts --- bring your own data! There will also be the option of getting a Thellier_GUI walk through from Brendan Cych

Recorded Talks

Talks from this year's workshop will be placed on the MagIC YouTube channel.

Poster Sessions

Posters will be up for the first two days of the workshop and there will be multiple occasions to view them. A dedicated poster session will occur on the first day from 17:00-18:00 and may continue into the reception afterwards. The poster boards are 70in wide by 48in tall. Smaller posters are fine. You will use tape to attach them. Some wall space will also be used.

Talk and Poster Abstracts

The deadline for abstracts for talks and posters is February 13, 2023. Every participant is invited to contribute an abstract and they will be available online. Please send your abstract to Nick Jarboe (njarboe@earthref.org).

The abstracts can be up to two pages text and figures, data tables and references. All abstracts must be submitted electronically a PDF file.
