Jason at night ready for its frst dive
The preparation for the midnight dive is mostly done. The science basket has several sample boxes for samples of bacterial mats, sediment and rocks. The white tubular scoops are used to sample mats and sediment and have a valve to keep the sample from being diluted by seawater on the way back to the surface. The flexible tube running to the back of Jason is attached to a vacuum pump to draw in bacterial mat and water samples.
