Scooping microbial mat from a wall venting hot water
The steep walls around the vents at this hydrothermal field are covered with microbial mats. They are scooped up with a sterile plastic pipe that is capped on one side and a ball valve on the other side. On the way down, the valve is closed with distilled water inside. Before sampling, the valve is opened and the distilled water released. Once the scoop is filled, the valve is closed to isolate the samples from seawater contamination.
