Suction - sampling microbial mats on the steep slopes of Loihi at M 39 A suction sampler (the deep sea equivalent of a shopvac) is used to collect microbial mat from the walls near the hydrothermal vents. Scientists hope to identify the critical microbes that interact with hot waters and basalt to obtain chemical energy.
