Mark's Treasure of Rock Samples Under Vacuum Mark Kurz's group has been sampling volcanic glass from Loihi's pillow basalts. They brought these rock samples up in special canisters that are airtight, disallowing any air contamination while the samples are being brought onboard the R/V Thompson. In the main lab they opened the canisters in a nitrogen-dominated atmosphere, allowing them to transport the glass chips into the shown sample holders, again without air contaminatiion. These sample holders then are vacuum-pumped to extract all possible volatiles and gasses. They will be transported to WHOI for analyses of noble gasses, such as He, Ne, Xe and Ar, using a mass spectrometer.
