Jason completed its first dive of the cruise shortly before noon Friday. Jason and Medea had been underwater for about 56 hours continuously. Before surfacing the deep-sea elevator was released from its weights and retrieved by the ship, then Medea and Jason were brought to the surface.
Once on deck the scientists waited impatiently while Jason was secured. Once they had access to the samples the labs flew into a flurry of activity. The slurp samples of bacterial mat were taken to the cold room, slide traps, bacterial traps and the final OSMO sampler to the microbiology lab and chambers containing rocks were taken into the main lab to be processed under a nitrogen atmosphere in the glove box.
The Jason techs went into action to get Jason and Medea ready for the next dive at Ula Nui. The upcoming dive is five times as deep, a high-pressure dive in 5,000 meters of water at the base of Loi’hi.
