Description
Howland Volcanic Island is located at 0¿ 48.8' N, 176¿ 37.2' W and is part of the Tokelau Seamounts on the Pacific Plate. It is 4639 m high with the top at -700 m and the ocean bottom at -5339 m. It has a volume of 8959 km3 and is fairly round with slightly irregular edges. The rifts radiate out in four predominate directions from a central peak. The first dredge for the Tokelau Seamounts was taken at Howland. Dredge AVON2-D26 was taken on the northwestern rift. Dredge AVON2-D27 was on the northeastern rift. Dredge AVON2-D28 was on the southeastern rift and dredge AVON2-D29 was on the southern rift.
