Description
Nikunau Atoll is located at 1¿ 23.9' S, 176¿ 26.0' E and is part of the Gilberts Ridge region on the Pacific Plate. It is 3767 m high with the top at -1100 m and ocean bottom at -4867 m. The seamount has a volume of 8668 km3 and displays a bent elbow shape pointing to the west and southeast. It is elongated with an azimuth of approximately 129¿. The edges are irregular and the two major rifts defining the seamount are running west and southeast respectively. These rifts also affect Beru Seamount, which is connected to Nikunau by a saddle with a depth of -2800 m.
