| Description | Uo Mamae or Machias Guyot is located at 14¿ 57.5' S, 172¿ 14.2' W and is part of the Samoan Seamount Chain. The guyot is relatively small with a 60 km basal diameter and the top surface reaching -600 m. It is elongated in a NW-SE direction and has a flat area at ~750m that is about 2.5km wide and 8km long. The guyot is located near the bend in the Tonga Trench and is aligned subparallel to the local trend of the trench axis. The northwest flank of the seamount has several volcanic cones that are 1-4km in diameter and appear to postdate formation of the edifice. The seamount is capped by a carbonate platform and rock samples collected from the flanks had equal amounts of vesicular and massive basalt. |
