We put three rocks on the ice, two black ones and a white one. After three hours (this picture), the black ones have sunk into the ice by about 1/2 of an inch and the white one almost did not sink in at all. This shows that solar heated rocks can melt the underlying ice and leave vertical tunnels in the ice!
