Resource Matrix The Earth's Magnetic Field
Description
An snapshot of geomagnetic induction for a layered Earth, calculated with finite element modeling software FlexPDE. Electrical conductivities: core - 5x10^5 S/m; lower mantle - 1 S/m; transition zone - .1 S/m; upper mantle - .01 S/m; crust and oceans unmodeled. Period: ~6.7 years. This long period calculation demonstrates the rejection of magnetic variations from the highly conductive core. The primary (external) field is on the left, the secondary (internal) field in the middle, and the total (sum of primary and secondary) field on the right.
