Description
The image shows 4 magnetic profiles across the East Pacific Rise, each with a different spreading rate. As the spreading rate increases from 25 to 50, 100, and 125 km/Myr (2.5, 5.0, 10.0 and 12.5 cm/yr respectively), the profiles become smoother. Smoother profiles are easier to compare the magnetic signatures on each side of the ridge and with magnetic profiles from other locations. Identical anomalies are indicated by arrows on all four profiles, whereas all the positive anomalies are filled in solid. This diagram is modified from the following resource.
