The ion bowl distribution, a type of ion conic with a low energy ion cutoff and field-aligned low energy ions, can be explained by purely perpendicular heating of ions on auroral magnetic field lines. The ion bowl distribution provides evidence that there exists a bulk ion heating mechanism, as opposed to a mechanism that effects only the tail of the ion distribution, and that this heating mechanism acts along a large portion of the magnetic filed line.
