High-resolution particle measurements obtained from the VIKING spacecraft have provided interesting new observations of accelerated and heated plasma on auroral field lines. We present observations of upward ion and electron beams and conics which indicate that the acceleration/ heating process is so variable that many different physical processes have to be taken into account. As a consequence of this variability a new classification scheme will be adopted. ¿American Geophysical Union 1987
