A simple relation holds between the gravity and elevation changes associated with a fissure eruption. If combined with inversion schemes, it enables us to estimate the location and geometry of the subsurface fractured area. We applied the technique to the 1986 eruption of the Izu-Oshima volcano, Japan, where a textbook-like fissure eruption was observed. ¿ American Geophysical Union
