Worm, H.-U. (1989). Comment on ‘‘Can remanent magnetization in the deep crust contribute to long wavelength magnetic anomalies?’’ by Peter N. Shive. Geophysical Research Letters 16: doi: 10.1029/89GL00650. issn: 0094-8276.

Shive [1989> in the section entitled Viscous Remanence in his paper discusses the important question of how much viscous magnetization can a rock possibly acquire compared to the induced magnetization. While his conclusion that ''the viscous component is not likely to be more than about 25% of the induced magnetization'' may be true for rocks containing 'soft' multi-domain grains (≈100 &mgr;m) it should be made clear that single domain and pseudo-single domain samples (0.1--10 &mgr;m) can acquire viscous magnetizations many times the intensities of the induced magnetizations. ¿ American Geophysical Union 1989
