The island of Fernando de Noronha, off the coast of Brazil, was studied in connection with the theory of oceanic crustal spreading. The remanent magnetism of 28 outcrops on the island was measured on the assumption that paleomagnetisms provide age indications based on their angular distances from the present geographic pole. The results indicate that none of the island outcrops is older than Miocene and invalidate the assumption that Fernando de Noronha could be superimposed with the Guinea gulf islands in a pre-continental drift configuration.
