Karl, T.R. and Heim, R.R. (1990). Are droughts becoming more frequent or severe in the United States?. Geophysical Research Letters 17: doi: 10.1029/90GL01738. issn: 0094-8276.

The frequency of droughts, their areal extent, and the quantity of precipitation received over the United States is highlighted by considerable decadal variability. At this time, there is no evidence to support a Twentieth Century drying trend in the United States precipitation and/or drought climatology. The considerable decadal variability however, suggests that major biophysical and socio-economic impacts are likely to accompany convincing evidence of a change in drought climatology.
