The 1990 Odawara earthquake (M5.1) occurred within an area where a large earthquake of M7 class is expected to occur in the future. This area (the ''Odawara area'') has been seismically quiescent since 1933. Analysis of near-field broadband seismograms and the extent of fore- and after-shocks suggests that the 1990 event had a high stress drop and that the Odawara area remains in a state of high stress which could potentially cause a large earthquake. ¿ American Geophysical Union 1992 |
